Lemon-Tahini Everything Sauce

Sometimes you just need a sauce that can do it all. How cliché is that. But seriously, how many times have you made a sauce for one particular dish, and then you realize you needed maybe 1/10th of the amount you made, and now you’re stuck trying to figure out how many times you can make a stir-fry in one week. Well, this sauce is a staple for me because it’s not only delicious but incredibly versatile. Use it as a salad dressing one day, a sauce for seared fish the next, and a garnish for chili the day after. It also comes together in minutes and requires no cooking. What more do you want? A taste? No problem, check out the recipe below!

Ingredients

1/2 cup

  • 1 lemon: juiced

  • 1 tbsp tahini

  • 3 tbsp hummus

  • 3 tbsp olive oil

  • Black pepper: to taste

  • Salt: to taste

  • Garlic powder: to taste

Preparation

  1. Whisk all ingredients together in a bowl until smooth and homogenous.

  2. Taste and adjust! Here are some ideas to get you going:

    1. If it’s too thick add more olive oil or water. Do this slowly, a little goes a long way.

    2. If you like it tangier, add more lemon juice.

    3. If you like it nuttier, add more tahini.

    4. If it’s too thin, add more hummus or tahini.

    5. If the flavor is falling flat, add more salt/pepper/garlic.

  3. This recipe is all about preference. Adjust to taste and enjoy!

Best Practices

As always:

This recipe relies heavily on packaged goods. That said, not all packaging is made equal! Make sure to opt for food packaged in recyclable containers, or, better yet, not packaged at all. Many spices can be bought in bulk, hummus can be made from canned chickpeas, and lemons may be found without any packaging as well. As for the oil and capers, try to choose options with recyclable containers (like glass or specific types of plastic) if possible!

Try to bring your own reusable bags when you go shopping for these ingredients, and choose grocery store chains that are engaged in their community.

These ingredients have been chosen with several things in mind:

This recipe leans on pantry staples, so if you don’t have any of these ingredients already, they’re wonderful additions to your kitchen. If you’re unfamiliar with tahini, it’s a thick paste made from sesame seeds, a crucial ingredient in traditional hummus, and an amazing condiment to have on hand!
